How the proposed tax changes will impact Canadian farmers
We’re sure many of you are aware of the federal government’s proposed tax changes released July 18, 2017, commonly referred to as the proposals. Regardless of how these changes have been communicated, the proposals will have a significant impact on tax planning for all business owners, including farmers and other agribusinesses. This includes higher tax costs for family businesses, as well as more complexity and higher costs for tax compliance, retirement, succession, and estate planning.

Underwriting changes
We’ve increased our preferred term underwriting minimum from $250,000 to $500,000. Effective October 16, 2017, medical evidence is no longer required on life insurance policies under $500,000 up to age 45 and on critical illness policies under $100,000 up to age 50. Continuing education requirements
Regulators and insurance carriers are focused on ensuring advisors are meeting their continuing education (CE) requirements. As part of carrier requirements under the CLHIA Reference document “Insurer Systems for Monitoring Statutory Compliance of Advisors”, carriers will be conducting random audits of advisors to confirm they are meeting their compliance requirements, including keeping a record of their required continuing education activities at their last insurance license renewal.
